Want to be a better developer ⚡️Learn to ask better questions!⚡️
.
I get DMs all the time asking me things that could easily and instantly be answered by a Google search.
.
Being able to efficiently Google for answers is one of the most important skills you can develop,
so I thought I’d share some tips that have helped people I’ve mentored in the past.
Hopefully they might help you too!
.
The key?
⭐️
BE SPECIFIC ⭐️
.
✅
Put the language or framework you’re using at the beginning of the search text ✅
Include keywords relating to the specific problem you’re facing.
Avoid vague search terms like “not working”
✅
Getting an error message?
Error code?
Include it!
✅
Include the operating system and version if necessary .
❌
Don’t state a generic problem:
“Collection View not working”
💯
State specifics:
“iOS10 UICollectionView showing no items”
.
If you’re still finding it hard to wade through millions of results,
try further narrowing down your search:
.
🔍
Use “quotes”
to exact match terms:
👉🏼
’Xcode install “iOS Simulator”
12.3 runtime’
.
🔍
Getting irrelevant results?
Use hyphen ’-‘
to exclude irrelevant terms:
👉🏼
‘java app development -android’
❗️Note:
Some OSes /
frameworks use negative numbers for error codes e.g.
‘WatchKit error -32182’.
In these cases,
remove the ‘-‘
otherwise you’ll be excluding the error you’re searching for!
.
🔍
Use “site:”
to search only a specific website:
👉🏼
‘UICollectionView empty site:stackoverflow.com’
.
🔍
Not sure about a technical term?
use “define:”
to get a definition:
👉🏼
‘define:
Rubber duck debugging’
🐤
.
If you still can’t find the answer,
then Stack Overflow may be the next thing to try.
Asking questions on S.O.
is probably another topic in itself (lmk in the comments if you’d like me to cover it!).
.
But again,
whether your talking to another developer or a search engine,
the key is to 𝗯𝗲
𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰!
.
Go forth,
save yourself time,
and find answers to all the things!
💪🏼
Cheers!
