     Get all the metrics!
     
     As I mentioned on a previous post,
     I LOVE collecting metrics about everything I do.
     Not only about coding,
     but really EVERYTHING!
     Sleep,
     exercises,
     finance,
     reading,
     movies,
     series,
     place I've visited,
     etc.
     
     The problem is that use different apps and services for each of these and keeping track of all that is crazy.
     I've been thinking about building an app that would help me aggregate all this data in a single place and possible let me visualize it on some nice configurable dashboard.
     
     It would be open source,
     of course!
     
     Do you also like collecting data like this?
     Would an app like this be useful for you?

     Can you work @cern if you are not a physicist?
     How much do we rely on computers and programming?
     -
     Computers have become essential part of our lives and science is no exception.
     It would have been impossible to find the Higgs boson without significant help from hardware and software engineers on the way.
     Why is it so?
     -
     Production of the Higgs boson is extremely hard and challenging.
     It happens extremely rarely,
     so you need a huge amount of collisions in order to study the Higgs.
     This resulted in us colliding protons 40 million times each second!
     With the current technology it is impossible to read out this amount of data so we have to filter it somehow.
     This is done with the use of specially developed hardware that reduces the rate by keeping only 100.000 interesting events.
     We define interesting events as those that have significant transversal activity.
     Can you guess why?
     -
     To further reduce the rate to something that we can store we are now granted with some additional time to better analyze the collision.
     In this short period of time very fast software is used on commercial processors in order to decide if the collision has a potential to be interesting.
     -
     Finally,
     1000 collisions are stored every second.
     These are stored to disks and tapes.
     Disks are used for data that we work with,
     since they are very fast but expensive.
     The backup and old data are stored on tapes which are much slower but very cheep.
     In total,
     we store more than 200 petabytes of data!
     -
     Future is holding many more challenges and we need young brilliant minds to work on solving them.
     Whether you prefer software or hardware both are needed in the future projects @cern.

     Friends who code.
     👨🏻‍💻👩🏽‍💻

     It’s been really nice to have a week off work!
     😅
     (my first week off since Christmas,
     so I think it was due!)
     although somehow it’s already Friday and I’m now kind of wishing I had 2 weeks 😂.
     .
     Still,
     it’s been good.
     A mix of running,
     catching up on life admin,
     coding (aka React adventures),
     meeting friends,
     and quite frankly just being lazy and not doing much.
     ☺️
     plus the weather has been great!
     😎
     .
     Starting my new client project on Monday!
     (Well,
     new project,
     returning client!)
     Looking forward to the change after a year working with my previous client.
     ☺️
     As always I’ll try and share as much as possible on stories.
